Christmas in Armenia

The Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates Christmas on January 6th. On this day it also celebrates the Epiphany (which means the revelation that Jesus was God’s son). Epiphany is now mainly the time Churches remember the Visit of the of Wise Men to Jesus; but some Churches, like the Armenian Apostolic Church, also celebrate the Baptism of Jesus (when he started his adult ministry) on Epiphany.

Some Armenians fast (don’t eat anything) in the week before Christmas. The Christmas Eve meal is called khetum ‘Խթում’. It often includes dishes such as rice, fish, nevik ‘նուիկ’ (green chard and chick peas) and yogurt/wheat soup called tanabur ‘թանապուր’. Desserts include dried fruits and nuts, rojik (whole shelled walnuts threaded on a string and encased in grape jelly), bastukh (a paper-like dessert made of grape jelly, cornstarch and flour). This lighter menu is designed to ease the stomach off the week-long fast and prepare it for the larger Christmas Day dinner. Children take presents of fruits, nuts, and other candies to older relatives.

Santa Claus Gaghant Baba / Kaghand Papa traditionally comes on New Year’s Eve (December 31st) because Christmas Day itself is thought of as more of a religious holiday in Armenia.

In Armenian Happy/Merry Christmas is Shnorhavor Amanor yev Surb Tznund (Շնորհավոր Ամանոր և Սուրբ Ծնունդ) (which means ‘Congratulations for the Holy Birth’). Happy/Merry Christmas in lots more languages.

At the beginning of December a big Christmas Tree (Tonatsar) is put up in Republic Square in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.

Favorite and traditional Holiday foods in Armenia include Anooshaboor (Armenian Christmas Pudding), Khozee bood (glazed ham) and dried fruits. Every house is ready with lots of sweets because anyone might knock on the door and come in for a party!

The name of Alaska

Do you know the origin of the place name Alaska? The name
Alaska comes from the Aleut word alaxsxaq,
means “an object toward which the action of
the sea is directed” – that is, the mainland.
It is also known as Alyeska, the “great land”, an Aleut word
formed from the same root.
Its nicknames are the Land of the Midnight Sun and America’s
Last Frontier. Its first nicknames were “Seward’s folly” and
“Seward’s icebox” to laugh at the secretary of state who
negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia, which
is considered foolish at the time.

is a giant observation wheel locating in the
Jubilee Gardens on the South Bank of the river Thames.
The structure designed by the architectural team
of David Marks and Julia Barfield, husband and wife.
They submitted their idea for a large observation wheel as part
of a competition to design a landmark for the new millennium.
None of the entrants win the competition.
However, the couple pressed on and eventually got the backing
of British Airways, who sponsored they project.

Nevsky Prospect

Nevsky Prospect is the main and most famous street of St. Petersburg. The
unique architectural ensemble of Nevsky Prospect was formed during the 18th –
early 20th centuries. It starts from the bank of the Neva River, runs through the
centre of the city and ends at the Neva River. The whole history of St. Petersburg
can be seen in the history of the avenue. Nevsky Prospect is 4.5 km long and 25-60
m wide. The narrowest section is located from the Admiralty to the Moika River, A. After the construction of the Admiralty in 1704 and the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in 1710, it was decided to build a road B each other and with the Novgorod Path, which was used by Russian merchants. The construction began on both sides at the same time, the roads were laid through the wood, and in 1760s they were connected into one road, C, but with a turn at the Vosstaniya Square. 1․ We buy a doberman dog named Mia for my grandfather, because in this year he will be 60 years old. Our dog is so cute and cool. Me, my brother and my sisters played during summer. We make a doghouse for her.

2. Me and my family gone to Gorgia with our frineds family. In their we meet more new families. We will keep the contact with them. One week ago we go to meet them. 

Honor and Help Your Parents;

Emily is a teenager and lives with her parents. She and her best friend, Kim, find out that their favorite band will give a concert in their town on Friday night. They really want to go, but they do not think their parents will let them.

Էմիլին պատանի էր և ապրում էր իր ծնողների հետ։ Նա և իր մտերիմ ընկերուհին՝Կիմը իմացել էին, որ իրենց սիրած ծումբը համերգ էր ունենալու իրենց քաղաքում ուրբաթ գիշերը։ Նրանք շատ են ուզում գնալ, բայց նրանք չեն մտածել, որ իրենց ծնողները պետք է իմանան դրա մասին։

Emily always asks her parents about the things that she wants to do, and they listen to what she has to say, so she decides to do the same thing this time. She explains that she wants to go to the concert with Kim, but her parents think that she is too young to go without an adult.

Emily tells Kim that she cannot go to the concert, but her friend’s answer is a real surprise to Emily. Kim tells her that she should just lie to her parents. «I asked my mom for permission to go and study with friends on Friday. But I will really go to the concert! She does not need to know,» Kim says.

Emily does not know what to say. She is always very honest with her parents, and they are fair in their decisions. Emily has never felt comfortable lying, and her parents always tell her that it is wrong.

«I really do not want to be dishonest with my parents,» Emily tells her friend.

«Oh, stop acting like a little kid! Everyone lies,» Kim replies.

But Emily is not so sure. She thinks that honesty is very important.

On Thursday, Kim invites Emily over to her house to watch a movie after school. When they get there, Kim and her mother get into a fight. Emily realizes that Kim lies to her mother all the time, and her mother does not trust her. Emily thinks this is terrible. She sits uncomfortably on the couch as Kim and her mother fight most of the afternoon.

As she sits there, Emily remembers that Kim always tells her how terrible her relationship with her mother is. Kim thinks her mother does not understand her, but Emily thinks maybe Kim’s mother is just tired of Kim being dishonest with her.

As she walks home, Emily decides she will not lie to her parents about the concert. There will be lots of concerts in the future, but these are the only parents she will ever have. She knows it is better to honor them and help them so that they can have a good relationship. Because her parents trust her, they let her do most of the things that she wants to do, and she really prefers it that way.

Երբ նա գնում էր տուն, Էմիլը որոշում է կայացնում չստել իր ծնողներին համերգի վերաբերյալ։ Դեռ շատ համերգներ կկայանան ապագայում, բայց կիր ծնողները միակն են։ Նա հասկանում էր, որ ավելի լավ կլինի հարգել նրանց և օգնել նրանց, այսպիսով նրան կկարողանան լինել լավ հարաբերությունների մեջ։ Որովհետև նրա ծնողները վստահում էին նրան և դրա շնորհիվ նրանք թողնում էին նրան անել այն ամենը ինչ նա կցանկանար և նա նախընտրում էր այդ տարբերակը։

Fish dishes are also very popular in Armenia. Different types of fish are bred in Lake Sevan, but the most delicious is a trout, which is called ishxan – “a royal fish”. The fish is boiled, stewed, fried, and cooked on skewer or on coal. Traditional fish dishes are kchuch and kutap.
Do you have a sweet tooth? Armenian cuisine has something special for you too. Gata is a multi-layered cake, each layer of which is saturated with melted butter and sugar. That’s why it has such soft dough and delicate flavor. A sudjukh is a must for any feast and New Year tables. It is prepared from grape syrup and walnuts. Armenia is a sunny country, rich with bright and juicy fruits and vegetables. However, without any doubt, the symbol of Armenians has always been – an apricot. They have been growing it for more than 3000 years. It absorbs all the bright rays of the sun and every year pleases people with its delicate flavor and aroma.
